About Joonas

Originally from Finland, Joonas Vehvilainen has lived in Thailand, the United States, and now the United Kingdom, where an early curiosity about how the mind and brain work guided his career path toward psychology. He completed an undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of York in 2014, studying areas such as social psychology, mental health disorders, and addiction. In 2015 he pursued a master’s degree in neuroscience at King’s College London with a focus on the behavioural aspects of addiction and mental health.

Joonas gained practical experience in London between 2016 and 2019, working as a healthcare assistant in a mental health unit and as a recovery worker in supported accommodation for people facing mental health and addiction challenges. In 2019 he began a master’s in addiction psychology and counselling at London South Bank University while working part time as a counsellor for the NHS, Humankind, and WDP from 2019 to 2021. He became a member of BACP in 2021 and went on to start his own practice in 2022, also working as an addiction therapist at Castle Craig Hospital in Scotland.

Drawing on training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Client-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, he supports people with stress, anxiety, addictions, eating concerns, self-esteem difficulties, ADHD, family and relationship issues, trauma and abuse, grief, intimacy-related problems, anger, and depression, among other concerns. He provides therapy in English and Finnish and accepts international clients. As a registered BACP member he emphasizes a practical, collaborative approach that combines psychoeducation, coping skills, and emotional support for people ready to seek help.

Therapeutic Approaches and Online Support

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps people clarify their values and develop practical ways to respond to difficult thoughts and feelings rather than getting stuck trying to eliminate them. It is often used for anxiety, depression, and life transitions. Attachment-Based Therapy focuses on patterns in relationships formed early in life and explores how these patterns affect current connections and emotional responses - this approach can help with intimacy issues, attachment difficulties, and family relationships. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) examines how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact and teaches concrete skills to change unhelpful patterns, making it useful for anxiety, depression, stress, and many everyday challenges.

Finding the right approach is part of the therapeutic process, and Joonas works collaboratively with each person to identify methods that fit their needs, goals, and personal preferences. Registered professionals and therapists often combine elements from different modalities to create a tailored plan that feels achievable and relevant.

Online therapy offers practical flexibility - sessions can take place by video call or phone, or through live chat and text-based messaging - making it easier to access support around work, family, or different time zones. These options help people maintain continuity of care and integrate therapeutic work into a busy life while keeping the focus on progress and collaboration with the therapist.
